Which leaders showed zeal like Josiah?
What other biblical leaders demonstrated similar zeal for God as Josiah did?

Setting the Scene with Josiah

2 Chronicles 34:6 shows the young king sweeping through “Manasseh, Ephraim, Simeon, and as far as Naphtali, and on their surrounding ruins”, smashing idols and tearing down high places. Scripture treats these acts as literal history, holding up Josiah as a model of wholehearted loyalty to the LORD.

Leaders Whose Zeal Echoes Josiah

• Moses – Exodus 32:19-20

“As Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, he burned with anger and threw the tablets out of his hands, shattering them at the base of the mountain.” Moses then ground the idol to powder and made Israel drink it—decisive action to restore pure worship.

• Phinehas – Numbers 25:7-11

He “was zealous with My zeal among them” says the LORD, after Phinehas drove a spear through the offenders who were flaunting idolatry. His swift obedience stopped a plague and secured an everlasting priestly covenant.

• Elijah – 1 Kings 18:36-40; 19:10

On Carmel he called down fire, executed the prophets of Baal, and later declared, “I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts.” Elijah’s solitary courage preserved covenant faith in a nation drifting toward Baal.

• Jehu – 2 Kings 10:16, 28

“Come with me and see my zeal for the LORD,” he told Jonadab, then eradicated the house of Ahab and purged Baal from Israel. Though Jehu’s reforms were incomplete, his passion against idolatry mirrors Josiah’s energy.

• Hezekiah – 2 Chronicles 29–31

In the first month of his reign “he opened the doors of the house of the LORD” (29:3). He renewed the Passover, tore down high places, and organized priests and Levites, showing consistent, kingdom-wide zeal.

• Ezra – Ezra 9:3-4; 10:1-4

Tearing his garments and pulling out his hair, Ezra wept over intermarriage with pagans, then led the people to covenant repentance. His grief-turned-action protected the holiness of the returned remnant.

• Nehemiah – Nehemiah 13:23-31

On finding mixed marriages and commerce on the Sabbath, he “contended with them, cursed them, beat some of them, and pulled out their hair.” Nehemiah’s bold enforcement of the law kept the community distinct for God.

• John the Baptist – Luke 3:3-18; John 1:23

Wearing camel’s hair and eating locusts, he preached repentance and identified Jesus as “the Lamb of God.” His fearless calls to righteousness cost him his life, revealing unwavering zeal for God’s kingdom.

• Paul – Acts 17:16-17; 2 Corinthians 11:2

In Athens “his spirit was provoked within him” at the sight of idols, prompting daily reasoning in the marketplace. Later he wrote, “I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy,” fighting for pure devotion to Christ among the churches.

Shared Marks of God-Honoring Zeal

• Hatred of idolatry and compromise

• Immediate, sometimes costly action to restore pure worship

• Willingness to confront sin publicly, regardless of opposition

• Reliance on God’s written word as the standard

• Ultimate aim of turning hearts back to the LORD

Why These Examples Matter Today

The same God who recorded Josiah’s reforms, and the fiery obedience of Moses, Phinehas, Elijah, and others, still calls His people to wholehearted devotion. Their stories stand as literal, historical reminders that decisive loyalty to the LORD brings renewal, safeguards true worship, and influences entire communities for generations.

How can we apply Josiah's zeal for God in our own communities?
