Setting the Scene: Proverbs 1:18 and the Snare of Self-Destruction

“But they lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush their own lives.” (Proverbs 1:18)

The Lord pulls back the curtain on greedy, violent schemes: in plotting harm or grabbing gain, the plotters pierce themselves. Scripture repeats the warning.

When Greed Fuels Violence

Greed and violence often travel together. Note these blended warnings:

• “Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed and establishes a town by injustice!” (Habakkuk 2:12)

• “Your wealth, your treasures … and all your sins within your borders.” (Jeremiah 17:11)

• “Their eyes bulge with abundance; the imaginations of their hearts run wild. They scoff and speak with malice.” (Psalm 73:7-8)

Living the Contrast: The Call to Contentment and Peace

• Contentment: “Godliness with contentment is great gain.” (1 Timothy 6:6)

• Generosity: “Command the rich … to be rich in good deeds, generous and willing to share.” (1 Timothy 6:17-18)

• Peace-making: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

• Trust: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

Scripture rings out with a single voice: greed and violence are a trap; contentment and peace are the way of life.
