Why did God like Solomon's request?
Why did Solomon's request in 1 Kings 3:10 please the Lord so much?

The Setting at Gibeon

“Solomon replied, ‘…Give Your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge Your people and to discern between good and evil.’” (1 Kings 3:9)

God immediately responds: “Now it pleased the LORD that Solomon had made this request.” (1 Kings 3:10)

What Solomon Actually Asked For

• “An understanding heart” – literally, a “hearing heart,” able to listen to God and to His people

• Discernment “between good and evil” – the wisdom necessary to apply God’s law in real-life cases (cf. Deuteronomy 17:18-20)

• Help to “judge Your people” – a request centered on serving the covenant community, not on personal gain

How the LORD Evaluated the Request

1 Kings 3:11-12 records God’s reply:

“Because you have requested this and have not asked for long life, or riches, or the death of your enemies but for discernment to administer justice, behold, I have done as you requested. I will give you a wise and discerning heart…”

Why the Request Delighted the LORD

• Selfless Motive

– Solomon put God’s people first, mirroring the principle, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33).

• Humble Dependence

– He confessed, “I am only a little child” (1 Kings 3:7), echoing James 4:6: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

• Alignment with God’s Character

– Justice and righteousness are the foundation of God’s throne (Psalm 89:14). Solomon asked for what lies at the center of God’s own heart.

• Faith in God’s Generosity

– Solomon believed God would freely give wisdom, just as James 1:5 promises: “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously… and it will be given to him.”

• Covenant Responsibility

– By seeking discernment to shepherd Israel, Solomon honored the divine mandate for kings laid out in Deuteronomy 17.

• Rejection of Earthly Idols

– He deliberately passed over the three great human cravings—long life, wealth, vengeance—demonstrating contentment in God alone (cf. 1 Timothy 6:6-7).

• Foreshadowing the Ideal King

– His request anticipates the perfect, Spirit-endowed wisdom of the Messiah (Isaiah 11:2-4).

God’s Overflowing Response

• Wisdom unrivaled in all history (1 Kings 3:12)

• Riches and honor he had not asked for (3:13)

• Conditional promise of long life based on obedience (3:14)

The Lord did “exceedingly abundantly above all” Solomon asked (Ephesians 3:20).

Takeaways for Today

• God is pleased when His children ask in line with His revealed will (1 John 5:14-15).

• Prioritizing God’s kingdom opens the door for blessings we never thought to request.

• True wisdom begins with reverent, humble fear of the LORD (Proverbs 1:7).

• A hearing heart remains the greatest request a believer can make, because it equips us to love God and serve others faithfully.
