Why does God "hate" these actions?
Why does God declare He "hates" these actions in Zechariah 8:17?

Setting the Scene

Zechariah 8 records God’s promise to restore Jerusalem after the exile.

• The chapter shifts from judgment to blessing, but God ties every blessing to genuine righteousness among His people (vv. 14-17).

• Verse 17 zeroes in on two heart-level sins: “Do not plot evil in your hearts against your neighbor. Do not love to swear falsely, for I hate all these things, declares the LORD.”

Identifying the Actions God Hates

1. Plotting evil in the heart against a neighbor

2. Loving (taking pleasure in) false oaths or perjury

Why These Actions Offend God’s Character

• God is holy and truthful by nature (Isaiah 6:3; Titus 1:2). Anything that contradicts holiness or truth provokes His hatred.

Psalm 5:4-6: “For You are not a God who delights in wickedness… You hate all workers of iniquity.”

Proverbs 6:16-19 lists “a heart that devises wicked schemes” and “a false witness who pours out lies” among the seven things the LORD hates.

Why These Actions Harm Community Life

• Plotting evil destroys trust and safety in the covenant community.

• False oaths pervert justice, oppress the innocent, and let the guilty go free (Exodus 23:1-2).

• When such sins spread, society unravels; God’s blessing stalls (Zechariah 7:9-14).

Leviticus 19:17-18 commands love for neighbor; hidden malice is the exact opposite.

Why These Actions Undermine Covenant Faithfulness

• Israel had sworn to live by God’s Law (Exodus 24:7). False oaths mock that covenant.

Deuteronomy 6:13 – “Fear the LORD your God, serve Him, and take your oaths in His name.” Swearing falsely drags God’s name through deception.

Malachi 3:5 shows perjurers listed with sorcerers and adulterers—covenant treachery in God’s courtroom.

New Covenant Echoes

• Jesus deepens the standard: inner anger equals murder, and simple honesty should make oaths unnecessary (Matthew 5:21-37).

1 John 3:15 – “Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.”

Colossians 3:9 – “Do not lie to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices.”

Putting It Into Practice Today

• Guard the heart: sinful schemes begin long before outward action (Proverbs 4:23).

• Cultivate transparent honesty—let “Yes” be yes and “No” be no.

• Seek reconciliation quickly; unseen grudges invite the very judgment Zechariah warned about.

• Remember: God hates these sins because they contradict who He is, corrupt the people He loves, and cripple the mission He assigns.
