Why follow God's worship instructions?
Why is it important to follow God's specific instructions in worship today?

The Text at a Glance

“Only at the place the LORD will choose in one of your tribes shall you offer your burnt offerings, and there you must do everything I command you.” (Deuteronomy 12:14)

Why God’s Specific Directions Matter

• They proclaim His sovereignty—He alone decides how He will be approached.

• They preserve purity—clear boundaries protect worship from pagan influence (vv. 2–3).

• They promote unity—one chosen place kept Israel from splintering into competing altars.

• They teach obedience—worship is never a negotiation; it is submission to revealed will.

Echoes Throughout Scripture

Exodus 25:40—Moses must build tabernacle “according to the pattern” shown on the mountain.

Leviticus 10:1-3—Nadab and Abihu offer “unauthorized fire” and are consumed; God says, “I will be revered.”

1 Samuel 15:22—“To obey is better than sacrifice.”

1 Chronicles 15:13—The ark’s first transport failed “because we did not inquire of Him about the proper order.”

John 4:23-24—True worshipers “must worship in spirit and truth” (heart engagement and revealed standard).

1 Corinthians 14:40—“All things should be done decently and in order.”

Hebrews 12:28-29—We offer acceptable worship “with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.”

What This Means for Worship Today

• Guard the Book: build every element of gathered worship on clear biblical warrant.

• Treasure Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice (Hebrews 10:10-14); we draw near through Him, yet on God’s terms.

• Cherish congregational unity—shared practices rooted in Scripture knit believers together.

• Resist cultural drift—when the world presses for novelty, Scripture anchors us.

• Expect blessing—God delights to meet His people in the ways He Himself has ordained.

Living It Out

1. Read the Word before planning the service; let Scripture set the agenda.

2. Sing truth-filled songs that echo biblical theology.

3. Pray Scripture-shaped prayers of adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and intercession.

4. Preach the whole counsel of God, not personal opinion (2 Timothy 4:2).

5. Celebrate the ordinances (baptism and the Lord’s Supper) exactly as instituted by Jesus.

6. Maintain reverence without losing joy—“serve the LORD with gladness” (Psalm 100:2) while remembering He is holy.

In Short

Following God’s specific instructions in worship is an act of love-fueled obedience that honors His holiness, anchors the church in truth, and invites His promised presence and blessing.
