Why should nations fear the LORD's name?
Why is it important for nations to "fear the name of the LORD"?

Key Text

“Nations will fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth will fear Your glory.” (Psalm 102:15)

Understanding “Fear the Name of the LORD”

• Not terror that drives away, but deep awe and submission that draws near

• Recognition of God’s absolute authority over every throne, border, and culture

• Willing obedience to His ways because His character is holy, just, and good

Why Nations Need This Holy Fear

• It acknowledges the true Sovereign. “For the kingdom is the LORD’s and He rules over the nations.” (Psalm 22:28)

• It guards national leaders from pride. “Now therefore, be wise, O kings; be admonished, O judges of the earth.” (Psalm 2:10)

• It restrains injustice. “He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the loving devotion of the LORD.” (Psalm 33:5)

• It invites God’s protection. “The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and delivers them.” (Psalm 34:7)

• It models truth for other peoples, fulfilling Israel’s ancient calling to shine (Deuteronomy 4:6–8).

Blessings Flowing from National Fear of the LORD

• Moral elevation — “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34)

• Material provision — “He will bless those who fear the LORD, both small and great.” (Psalm 115:13)

• Social healing — “If My people who are called by My name humble themselves… I will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

• Enduring legacy — “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.” (Psalm 33:12)

Consequences of Neglecting this Fear

• Loss of security — “The LORD has rejected and given the crown over to others.” (Lamentations 2:7)

• Judicial discipline — “At one moment I may speak concerning a nation… to uproot… but if it does evil… I will relent of the good.” (Jeremiah 18:7–10)

• Ultimate ruin — “For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish.” (Isaiah 60:12)

How Nations Express Proper Fear Today

• Crafting laws that reflect God-given dignity of every human life

• Upholding justice impartially, safeguarding the poor and the powerless

• Honoring marriage and family as God’s first social institution

• Protecting religious freedom so that people may openly worship the LORD

• Repenting of collective sins and pursuing righteousness in public policy

Looking Forward to the Ultimate Fulfillment

Psalm 102:15 anticipates a day when every capital city bows willingly: “All the kings of the earth will fear Your glory.” Jesus the Messiah will accomplish this in His return: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ.” (Revelation 11:15) Until then, every nation is summoned to fear the name of the LORD—for its own blessing, for global witness, and for the honor of the King of kings.

How does Psalm 102:15 connect with the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20?
