Wisdom's source: God in both verses.
Compare Job 28:22 with Proverbs 2:6. How do both verses define wisdom's source?

Setting the Stage

Job 28 is a poetic exploration of mankind’s relentless search for treasures—and for wisdom itself.

Proverbs 2 is Solomon’s invitation to pursue wisdom by listening to God.

• The two passages meet at the same conclusion: only the LORD Himself can supply true wisdom.

Examining Job 28:22

“Destruction and Death say, ‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’” (Job 28:22)

• “Destruction and Death” (Hebrew: Abaddon and Maveth) represent the deepest, most inscrutable realms.

• They have only “heard a rumor” of wisdom—meaning wisdom is beyond even the grave’s reach.

• By implication, wisdom’s source is not found in human experience, earthly depths, or the afterlife; it is found only in God (v. 23, 28).

Exploring Proverbs 2:6

“For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:6)

• Wisdom is explicitly a gift—“the LORD gives.”

• Its channel is God’s own speech—“from His mouth,” pointing to revelation through Scripture.

• Knowledge and understanding are bundled with wisdom; all three flow directly from the LORD.

Harmonizing the Two Verses

Job 28:22 shows who does NOT possess wisdom (even Death).

Proverbs 2:6 shows who DOES possess and dispense wisdom (the LORD).

• Together they teach:

– Wisdom is above every created realm.

– It is inaccessible by human effort alone.

– It must come from the LORD, who freely grants it to those who seek Him.

Supporting Passages

Job 28:23—“God understands its way, and He knows its place.”

Job 28:28—“The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom.”

Psalm 111:10—“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.”

James 1:5—“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously…”

Colossians 2:3—In Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

Takeaway for Today

• True wisdom is not mined, traded, or discovered in human realms; it is revealed by God.

• Scripture is the primary avenue—“from His mouth” (Proverbs 2:6).

• Our response is to seek Him, fear Him, and receive the wisdom He alone can give.
