Commanders of the Army

1This is the list of the Israelites - the heads of their families, and officers of thousands and hundreds, and their officers who served the king in the supervision of the army divisions, who were on duty month by month throughout the year. Each division consisted of twenty-four thousand men.

2Over the division for the first month was Jashobeam, son of Zabdiel; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 3He was a descendant of Perez, and he was in charge of all the officers of the army for the first month. 4And over the division for the second month was Dodai, an Ahohite; and Mikloth was the leader of his division; also twenty-four thousand. 5The commander of the army for the third month was Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, a chief priest; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 6This is that Benaiah, who was mighty among, and above, the thirty; and Ammizabad, his son, was leader of his division. 7The officer for the fourth month was Asahel, brother of Joab, and Zebadiah, his son, succeeded him; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 8The officer for the fifth month was Shamhuth, the Izrahite; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 9The officer for the sixth month was Ira, son of Ikkesh, the Tekoite; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 10The officer for the seventh month was Helez, the Pelonite, of the descendants of Ephraim; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 11The officer for the eighth month was Sibbecai, the Hushathite, of the Zerahites; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 12The officer for the ninth month was Abiezer, the Anathothite, of the Benjamites; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 13The officer for the tenth month was Maharai, the Netophathite, of the Zerahites; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 14The officer for the eleventh month was Benaiah, the Pirathonite, of the descendants of Ephraim; and in his division were twenty-four thousand. 15The officer for the twelfth month was Heldai, the Netophathite, of Othniel; and in his division were twenty-four thousand.

16The leaders of the tribes of Israel were: over the Reubenites, Eliezer, son of Zichri; over the Simeonites, Shephatiah, son of Maachah; 17Over the Levites, Hashabiah, son of Kemuel; over the Aaronites, Zadok; 18Over Judah, Elihu, one of the brothers of David; over Issachar, Omri, son of Michael; 19Over Zebulun, Ishmaiah, son of Obadiah; over Naphtali, Jerimoth, son of Azriel: 20Over the descendants of Ephraim, Hoshea, son of Azaziah; over the half tribe of Manasseh, Joel, son of Pedaiah; 21Over the half tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo, son of Zechariah; over Benjamin, Jaasiel, son of Abner: 22And over Dan, Azareel, son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.

23But David did not number those who were twenty years old and younger; because the LORD had said He would increase Israel like the stars of the heavens. 24Joab, son of Zeruiah, began to number them, but he did not finish, because God’s wrath fell upon Israel because of this census; nor was the number ever recorded in the chronicles of King David.

25Azmaveth, son of Adiel, was over the king's treasures; and Jehonathan, son of Uzziah, was over the storehouses in the fields, cities, villages, and in the towers; 26And over those who worked, tilling the ground of the fields was Ezri, son of Chelub; 27And over the vineyards was Shimei, the Ramathite; over the vineyard harvests and wine cellars was Zabdi, the Shiphmite; 28And over the olive and sycamore trees in the Shephelah (low plains) was Baal-hanan, the Gederite; and over the supplies of olive oil was Joash; 29And over the herds that grazed in Sharon was Shitrai, the Sharonite; and over the herds that grazed in the valleys was Shaphat, son of Adlai. 30Over the camels was Obil, the Ishmaelite; and over the donkeys was Jehdeiah, the Meronothite; 31And over the flocks was Jaziz, the Hagrite. All these were the overseers of King David's property.

32Also Jonathan, David's uncle, was a counselor, a wise man, and a scribe; and Jehiel, son of Hachmoni, attended the king's sons; 33And Ahithophel was the king's counselor; and Hushai, the Archite, was the king's confidant. 34Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada, son of Benaiah, and by Abiathar. And the general of the king's army was Joab.
