1But King Solomon loved many foreign women; in addition to the daughter of Pharaoh - women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites, 2Those were the nations that the LORD had warned Israel of: “You shall not intermarry with them, for they will surely turn your hearts to their gods.” And yet, Solomon clung to them in love. 3He had seven hundred wives, and princesses, plus three hundred concubines; and his wives led his heart astray. 4As Solomon grew old, his wives turned away his heart to worship other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the LORD his God, as the heart of David, his father, was. 5For Solomon worshipped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom (Molech), the detestable god of the Ammonites. 6And Solomon did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and did not fully follow the LORD, as David, his father, did.

7Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh, the abominable god of Moab, on the hill east of Jerusalem, and for Molech, the detestable god of the Ammonites. 8And he built shrines for his other foreign wives, to burn incense and sacrifice to their gods. 9And the LORD was very angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned from the LORD God of Israel, Who had appeared to him twice, 10And had warned him about this: that he must not go after other gods. But he did not obey the LORD’s warning. 11Therefore, the LORD said to Solomon, “Since you are doing this, and you have violated My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I will surely rip the kingdom away from you, and will give it to one of your servants. 12But I will not do it in your lifetime, for the sake of David, your father; but I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13I will not tear the entire kingdom away, but I will leave one tribe to your son, again for the sake of David, My servant, and for the city of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”

And the LORD stirred up an adversary to Solomon: Hadad, the Edomite; who was of royal descent in Edom. 15Because, back when David was in Edom, and Joab, as commander of the army, had gone up to bury the dead, after he had killed every male in Edom; 16Joab and the Israelites remained there for six months, until every male in Edom had been killed. 17But Hadad, being then just a little child, had fled into Egypt, with certain of his father's Edomite servants. 18And they set out from Midian, and passed through Paran, where they gathered men, and then went to Egypt, to Pharaoh, king of Egypt; who gave Hadad a house, land, and food supplies. 19And Hadad found great favor with Pharaoh, so that he gave him the sister of his own wife, Queen Tahpenes, in marriage. 20And this sister of Queen Tahpenes bore him a son, Genubath, whom Tahpenes then nursed and weaned in Pharaoh's house; and Genubath grew up in household and among the sons of Pharaoh. 21And while in Egypt, Hadad heard that David and Joab, the commander of the army, were dead, and he said to Pharaoh, “Let me depart, that I may return to my own country.” 22Then Pharaoh said to him, “But what have you lacked with me, that you want to return to your own country?” And he answered, “Nothing; but let me go.”

23And God stirred up another adversary to Solomon: Rezon, son of Eliada, who fled from his lord Hadadezer, king of Zobah: 24And he gathered men to him, and became leader of a band, when David killed the men of Zobah; and they went to Damascus, where Rezon settled and gained control. 25And so Rezon was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, besides what Hadad did; and Rezon abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.

26And one of Solomon's servants, an official named Jeroboam, son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, whose mother was a widow named Zeruah, also rebelled against Solomon. 27And this was why he rebelled against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David, his father. 28And Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor; and Solomon, seeing that young Jeroboam was industrious, put him in charge of the whole labor force of the tribes of Joseph. 29And then, when Jeroboam left Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah, the Shilonite, found him along the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and the two were alone in the field; 30And Ahijah grabbed the new garment that Jeroboam was wearing, and tore it in twelve pieces. 31And he said to Jeroboam, “You take ten of the twelve pieces; for thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to you 32(But he shall have one tribe for My servant, David's, sake, and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel), 33Because Israel has forsaken Me, and has worshipped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh, the god of the Moabites, and Milcom, the god of the Ammonites, and has not walked in My ways, to do what is right in My eyes, and to keep My statutes and My ordinances, as David, his father, did. 34However, I will not take the entire kingdom out of Solomon’s hand; but I will keep him a ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David, My servant, whom I chose, because he kept My commandments and My statutes: 35But I will take the kingdom out of his son's hand, and will give it to you - ten tribes. 36And to his son I will give just one tribe, so that David, My servant, may have a light always before Me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen to put My name in. 37And I will place you on the throne, to reign as your soul desires, as king over Israel. 38And, if you will listen to all that I command you, and will walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight, and keep My statutes and My commandments, as David, my servant, did, then I will be with you, and build you a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel to you. 39And I will for this punish the descendants of David for this, but not forever.’” 40Solomon therefore sought to kill Jeroboam. And Jeroboam fled to Egypt, to Shishak, king of Egypt, and stayed in Egypt until the death of Solomon.

41And the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon? 42And Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel for forty years. 43Then Solomon died, and was buried in the city of David, his father; and Rehoboam, his son, reigned in his stead.
