1Again, David assembled all the able men of Israel - thirty thousand. 2And David went with them from Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which bears the Name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, Who dwells between the cherubim. 3And they set the ark of God on a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, in Gibeah; and Abinadab’s sons, Uzzah and Ahio, drove the new cart. 4And they brought and accompanied the ark of God from the house of Abinadab, at Gibeah; and Ahio went ahead of the ark. 5And David and all the people of Israel played on all manner of instruments made of fir wood - harps, psalteries, timbrels, cornets, and cymbals - before the LORD. 6And when they got to Nacon's threshing floor, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark of God, because the oxen shook it. 7And the anger of the LORD flared against Uzzah; and God struck him there for his error; and he died there beside the ark of God. 8And David was dismayed, because the LORD had broken out in anger against Uzzah; and he named that place “Perez-uzzah” (to burst out against Uzziah) to this day. 9And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and asked, “How shall the ark of the LORD ever come to me?” 10So David decided not to move the ark of the LORD with him into the city of David; but instead, David took it aside to the house of Obed-edom, the Gittite. 11And the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom for three months; and the LORD blessed Obed-edom, and all his household. 12And they told King David, “The LORD has blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that pertains to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with rejoicing. 13And it was so, that when those who bore the ark of the LORD (this time borne by the priests with the staves provided for that purpose, as prescribed by the LORD) had gone six paces, David sacrificed oxen and fatlings. 14And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and he was wearing a linen ephod. 15So David and all the people of Israel brought the ark of the LORD up with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpets. 16And as the ark of the LORD entered the city of David, Michal, Saul's daughter, looked out through a window, and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart. 17And they brought the ark of the LORD, and set it in its place, inside the tabernacle that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. 18And as soon as David had finished offering burnt and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts. 19And he distributed to all the people, to the entire multitude of Israel, both women and men, a cake of bread, and a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins. And then all the people departed for their homes. 20Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal, Saul’s daughter, came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious was the king of Israel today, who distinguished himself today going half-naked in full view of the handmaids of his servants, like some vulgar fellow would!” 21And David replied to Michal, “It was before the LORD, Who chose me over your father, and all his family, when He appointed me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel; therefore I will celebrate before the LORD. 22And I will be yet more undignified than this, and am willing to be humiliated in my own sight; and that of the maidens whom you have spoken of. By them I shall be held in honor.” 23Therefore, Michal, the daughter of Saul, remained childless until the day she died. Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser.
