1And they set out from Elim, and the Israelites came to the Desert of Sin, that lies between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they left Egypt. 2And the whole congregation of the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the desert: 3And said to them, “If only God had killed us back in Egypt, where we ate our fill of meat and bread! But you have brought us out into this desert to kill us all with hunger.” 4Then the LORD said to Moses, “Look, I will rain bread down from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain amount each day, so that I may test them to see whether they will obey My law, or not. 5And on the sixth day, they shall prepare what they gather; and it shall be twice as much as their usual daily gathering.” 6And so Moses and Aaron told all the Israelites, “By evening, you shall know that the LORD has brought you out of the land of Egypt; 7And in the morning, you shall see the glory of the LORD; because He hears your complaining against Him; and who are we, that you grumble against us?” 8And Moses said, “You will know when the LORD gives you meat to eat in the evening, and all the bread you want in the morning. The LORD hears your complaints against Him: and what are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against God.” 9And Moses told Aaron, “Tell all the entire Israelite congregation: ‘Come before the LORD; for He has heard your grumbling.’” 10And as Aaron spoke to all the Israelites, as they looked toward the desert, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. 11And the LORD said to Moses, 12“I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘This evening you shall eat meat; and in the morning, you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am the LORD your God.’” 13And that evening vast numbers of quail came and covered the camp; and in the morning, the dew lay all around the camp. 14And when that dew evaporated, the ground was blanketed with something like fine white flakes of frost. 15And when the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is this?!” because they did not know what it was. And Moses told them, “This is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat. 16This is what the LORD has commanded: Gather as much of it as each one needs, an omer for each person in your tent.” 17And the Israelites did so; and some gathered more, and some less. 18And when they measured it with an omer, those who gathered more had nothing over, and those who gathered little had no less; and every man gathered as much as they needed to eat. 19Then Moses said, “Do not leave any of it until morning.” 20Nevertheless, some did not listen to Moses; but kept some of it until the morning. But it bred maggots, and began to smell. Then Moses was angry with them. 21And after this, they gathered it each morning, each according to his needs; and when the sun became hot, it melted away. 22And on the sixth day they gathered twice as much as usual - two omers for each person; and the leaders of the congregation came and reported this to Moses. 23And Moses told them, “This is what the LORD has said, ‘Tomorrow is the day of rest - the holy Sabbath unto the LORD: bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil; and whatever remains, save it until the morning.’” 24And they saved what was left until morning, as Moses said; and it did not become odious, nor were there any maggots in it. 25And Moses said, “Eat that today; for today is a Sabbath unto the LORD. Today you shall not find it in the field. 26Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day - the Sabbath - there shall be none.” 27And still, some went out to gather on the seventh day, and they found none. 28And the LORD said to Moses, “How long will these people refuse to follow My instructions and My commands? 29Consider that the LORD has given you the Sabbath, that is why He gives you on the sixth day bread enough for two days. Remain in your tents; let no one go out on the seventh day.”30So the people rested on the seventh day. 31And the people of Israel called the ‘bread’ “Manna.” It was like coriander seed, but white; and the it tasted like wafers made with honey. 32And Moses said, “This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Fill an omer with it to be kept for your generations to come; so that they may see the bread with which I have fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of Egypt.’” 33And Moses told Aaron, “Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna in it, and lay it up before the LORD, to be kept for your generations.” 34,So Aaron laid it up with the tablets of the testimony, to be kept, as the LORD commanded Moses. 35And the Israelites ate manna for forty years. They ate it until they came to a land inhabited - until they came to the border of Canaan, the land where they would settle. 36Now an omer is one tenth of an ephah (about 2 quarts).
