1And Jacob heard Laban's sons saying, “Jacob has taken away all that our father owned”, and “He has gained all the wealth that our father once had.” 2And Jacob noticed the countenance of Laban, and it was not toward him as before. 3And the LORD said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers, and to your family; and I will be with you.” 4And Jacob called Rachel and Leah out to the field where his flock was. 5And he said to them, “I see your father's attitude toward me is not as before; but the God of my father has been with me. 6And you know that I have served your father with all my strength. 7And your father has deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God did not allow him to harm me. 8If he said, ‘The speckled shall be your wages’; then all the cattle bore speckled; and if he said, ‘The striped shall be your hire;’ then all the cattle bore striped young. 9Thus God has taken the cattle of your father, and given them to me. 10And the when cattle conceived, I looked, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which mated with the cattle were striped, speckled, and spotted. 11And the Angel of God called to me in a dream, ‘Jacob:’ And I said, ‘Here am I.’ 12And He said, ‘Look up, and see, all the rams which mate with the cattle are striped, speckled, and spotted; for I have seen all that Laban does to you. 13I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar, and where you vowed a vow to Me. Now arise, leave this land, and return to the land of your family.’” 14And Rachel and Leah said to him, “Do we have any share or inheritance in our father's house? 15Are we not regarded by him as strangers? For he has sold us, and has also quite wasted our money. 16For all the riches which God has taken from our father is ours, and our children's: now then, whatever God has said to you, do.”

17Then Jacob set his sons and his wives upon camels; 18And he drove all his cattle ahead of him, taking all his goods and cattle, which he had acquired in Paddan-aram, to return to Isaac, his father, in the land of Canaan. 19And Laban went to shear his sheep; and Rachel had stolen her father's images (idols). 20And so Jacob left without telling Laban, the Syrian, that he was leaving. 21He fled with all that he had; and crossed over the Euphrates River, and headed toward the hill country of Gilead.

22And on the third day, when Laban learned that Jacob had fled, 23He took his brothers, and pursued Jacob for seven days; and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead. 24And God came to Laban, the Syrian, in a dream by night, and said to him, “Take heed that you do not say anything - good or bad- to Jacob.”

25Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead when Laban overtook him; and Laban and his brothers pitched their tents there too. 26And Laban said to Jacob, “Why have you slipped away without telling me, and carried away my daughters, like captives taken with the sword? 27Why did you sneak away; and not tell me, that I might have sent you away with mirth, songs, timbrel, and harp? 28And you have not allowed me to kiss my sons and my daughters? You have done a foolish thing. 29I have the power to do harm to you; but the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, ‘Take heed that you do not speak to Jacob, either good or bad.’ 30And now, though you must be going, because you have longed to return to your father's household, why have you stolen my gods?” 31And Jacob said to Laban, “I slipped away because I was afraid that perhaps you would take your daughters from me by force. 32But if you find your gods with anyone, that person shall not live: in the presence of our brothers, look for what is yours among us, and take it back.” For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them. 33And Laban went and searched in Jacob's tent, and in Leah's tent, and the two maidservants’ tents; but did not find them. Then he left Leah's tent, and went into Rachel's tent. 34Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel's saddle, and was sitting upon them. And Laban searched her tent, but did not find them. 35And she said to her father, “Do not let it displease you if I do not rise before you; for I am having my period.” And though he searched diligently, he found no images.

36Then Jacob was angry, and said to Laban, “What is my crime? What is my sin, that you have so hotly pursued me? 37Since you have searched all my belongings, what have you found of all your stuff? Set it here before our brothers, that they may judge between us. 38For twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried their young, and I have not eaten the rams of your flock. 39Whatever was torn by wild animals I did not bring to you; but I bore the loss of it myself; and you demanded payment for it, whether stolen by day, or by night. 40That is how I was: in the days, the drought consumed me, and then the frost at night; and I was deprived of my sleep. 41Thus have I been in your house for twenty years; I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your cattle; and you have changed my wages ten times. 42If the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had not been with me, surely you would have sent me away empty. God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night.” 43And Laban said to Jacob, “These are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that you see is mine: and what can I do this day to these my daughters, or to their children, whom they have born? 44Now therefore come, let us make a treaty, you and I; and let it serve as a witness between us.”

45And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar. 46And Jacob said to his relatives, “Gather stones.” and so they took stones, and made a heap: and they ate there beside the heap. 47And Laban called it “Jegar-sahadutha” (‘heap of witness’ in Syriac); but Jacob called it “Galeed.” (‘heap of witness’ in Hebrew) 48And Laban said, “This heap is a witness between me and you today.” Therefore, the name of it was called Galeed; 49And it is also called Mizpah (for a prominent cliff north of Gilead); for he said, “The LORD watch between me and you, when we are absent one from another. 50If you mistreat my daughters, or take other wives beside my daughters, even if no man is with us; God is witness between me and you.” 51And Laban also said to Jacob, “See this heap, and pillar, which I have cast between me and you; 52This heap, and this pillar, are a witness, that I will not cross over this heap to you, and that you shall not cross over this heap and pillar to harm me. 53May the God of Abraham, and of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” And Jacob took an oath in the name of the fear of his father Isaac. 54Then Jacob offered a sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brothers to a meal; and they ate and stayed in the mount all night.

55And early in the morning, Laban arose, kissed his sons and daughters, and blessed them: and Laban returned to his place.
