1And then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, 2“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I give you.” 3So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, in obedience to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city – just crossing it was a three days' journey. 4And Jonah went one day's journey into the city, and he proclaimed, “In forty days, Nineveh shall be overthrown.” 5And the people of Nineveh believed God, and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them down to the least of them. 6For word of God came to the ears of king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, laid his robe aside, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7And he issued the following proclamation to be published through Nineveh by decree of the king and his nobles: “Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not eat, nor drink: 8But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry urgently to God; let everyone turn from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. 9Who knows? God may yet relent, and with compassion, turn from His fierce anger, so that we will not perish” 10And when God saw what they did - that they turned from their evil ways - He indeed relented and did not bring upon them what He had threatened to do to them.
