1And when all the kings of the Amorites, on the west side of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites, on the Mediterranean coast, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the Israelites to cross over, their hearts melted, and they no longer had any courage to face or oppose the Israelites.

2At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make sharp flint knives, and circumcise the Israelites a second time.” 3And so Joshua made sharp knives, and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath-haaraloth (the hill of the foreskins). 4And this is the reason Joshua circumcised them: all the men who came out of Egypt, who were of military age, had died in the wilderness along the way, after they left Egypt. 5And while all the people who came out of Egypt were circumcised, all the men who were born in the wilderness along the way as they journeyed from Egypt, had not been circumcised. 6For the Israelites wandered in the wilderness for forty years, till all the men of military age, who came out of Egypt, were deceased, because they had disobeyed the LORD – it was they to whom the LORD promised that He would not show them the land, which the LORD promised their fathers that He would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey. 7And their sons, whom He raised up in their stead, they were the ones that Joshua circumcised; because they had not been circumcised along the way. 8And after they had finished circumcising all the men, they stayed where they were in the camp, until they had all healed. 9And the LORD told Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you.” Therefore, the name of the place is called Gilgal (meaning “rolling”) unto this day. 10And the Israelites camped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho. 11And they ate of the old grain of the land on the day after the Passover - unleavened cakes, and parched grain - in the very same day. 12And the manna stopped appearing on the day after they had eaten the old grain of the land; nor did the Israelites ever eat manna any more, but they ate of the produce of the land of Canaan that year.

13And when Joshua was by Jericho, he looked up, and there stood a Man in front of him with His sword drawn in His hand: and Joshua went to Him, and asked Him, “Are You for us, or for our adversaries?” 14And He said, “Neither; but I have now come as Captain of the host of the LORD.” And Joshua fell face down on the ground in reverence, and said to Him, “What message does my Lord have for His servant?” 15And the Commander of the LORD's army replied, “Take your sandals from your feet; for the place on which you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.
