1Then Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose early, and camped beside the well of Harod, while the army of the Midianites were on the north side of them, in the valley by the hill of Moreh. 2And the LORD said to Gideon, “There are too many people with you for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, or Israel will boast against Me, and say, ‘My own strength has saved me.’ 3Now, go, and announce to army, ‘Whoever is timid or afraid, let him return now from Mount Gilead.’” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned; leaving ten thousand remaining. 4And the LORD told Gideon, “There are still too many people; bring them down to the water, where I will test them for you: those of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you’, they shall go with you; and of whomever I say to you, ‘This shall not go with you’, they shall not go.” 5So he brought the people down to the water: and the LORD said to Gideon, “Anyone who laps the water with his tongue, like a dog laps, you shall separate from those who kneel down to drink.” 6And the number of those who lapped, cupping their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men; while all the rest bowed down upon their knees to drink water. 7And the LORD said to Gideon, “By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go home.” 8So the people took provisions in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of the men of Israel back to their tents, and he kept only the three hundred men. And the camp of the army of Midian lay below them in the valley. 9And that night, the LORD said to Gideon, “Arise, get down to their camp; for I have delivered it into your hand. 10But if you are afraid to attack, go down to their camp with Purah, your servant. 11And you shall hear what they are saying; and then you shall be encouraged to attack their camp.” Then he went down with Purah, his servant, to the outskirts of the armed camp. 12And the Midianites and Amalekites and all the men of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were beyond numbering, as numerous as the sand by the seaside. 13And when Gideon drew near, there was a man who was telling his dream to a fellow soldier, and he said: “I dreamed a dream, and a round cake of barley bread tumbled into the Midian camp, and struck a tent so that the tent collapsed.” 14And his fellow soldier answered, “This is nothing but the sword of Gideon, son of Joash, a man of Israel; for into his hand God has delivered the entire Midian camp.” 15And when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and its interpretation, he worshipped, and returned to the army of Israel, and shouted, “Get up! The LORD has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand.” 16And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty jars, and lamps within the jars. 17And he told them, “Watch me, and do as I do; and, when I come to the outskirts of the camp, do what you see me do. 18When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then you blow your trumpets on every side of the camp, and shout, ‘The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon!’” 19So Gideon, and the hundred men with him, came to the outskirts of the camp just after the guard had set the middle watch (just after midnight): and they blew their trumpets, and broke the jars in their hands. 20And all three companies blew the trumpets, and broke the jars, raised the lamps in their left hands, and their trumpets in their right hands to blow them; and shouted, “The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon!” 21And while each man held his position around the camp, all those in the camp ran, crying as they fled. 22And when the three hundred blew the trumpets, the LORD set every man's sword against his fellow soldier, throughout the entire camp: and their army fled toward Beth-shittah in Zererah, as far as the border of Abel-meholah, near Tabbath. 23And the Israelites from the tribes of Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh came together and pursued the Midianites. 24And Gideon sent messengers throughout all Mount Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites, and seize the shallow waters (fords) of the Jordan ahead of them as far as Beth-barah.” Then the men of Ephraim came together, and seized the fords of the Jordan as far as Beth-barah. 25And they captured two leaders of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb. They slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and continued their pursuit of the Midianites, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.
