1And when the Canaanite King, Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming along the road, he attacked, and took some Israelites prisoners. 2Then the people of Israel made this vow to the LORD, “If You will indeed deliver these people into our hands, then we will totally destroy their cities.” 3And the LORD heard their plea, and delivered up the Canaanites; and Israel totally destroyed them and their cities: and they called the name of the place “Hormah” (Hearkened).

4And they traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom: but the people were very discouraged and impatient because of the long journey. 5And they spoke against God, and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is neither food, nor water; and our soul loathes this light bread (manna).” 6And the LORD sent venomous snakes among them, that bit the people; and many Israelites died. 7Then the people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, when we spoke against the LORD, and against you. Pray unto the LORD, that He will take away these serpents from us.” And Moses prayed for them. 8And the LORD said to Moses, “Make a replica of a poisonous snake, and mount it upon a pole; and whenever anyone is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.” 9And Moses made bronze replica of a venomous snake, and mounted it upon a pole; and then, if a snake had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze snake replica, he lived.

10And the Israelites set out, and camped in Oboth. 11And they journeyed from Oboth, and camped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness on the eastern border of Moab. 12From there they came and camped in the valley of Zared. 13They moved from there and camped on the far side of the Arnon River, which is in the wilderness that extends into the territory of the Amorites: for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 14That is why it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD, “What He did in the Red Sea, and in the brooks of Arnon, 15And at the stream of the brooks that go down to the dwelling of Ar, and lie upon the border of Moab.” 16And from there they went to Beer: the well where the LORD said to Moses, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.” 17Then Israel sang this song, “Spring up, O well; sing praises to it: 18The princes dug the well, the nobles of the people dug it, with their scepters and their staves.” And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah. 19And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth; 20And from Bamoth to the valley in the country of Moab, where the top of Pisgah overlooks the wasteland toward Jeshimon.

21And Israel sent messengers to say to Sihon, king of the Amorites, 22“Let us pass through your land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink from any well: but we will go along the king's highway, until we have passed through your land.” 23But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his border; but he gathered his army, and marched out into the wilderness against Israel; and when he reached Jahaz, he attacked Israel. 24But Israel defeated him with the sword, and occupied his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok - but only as far as the Ammonites; because their border was fortified. 25Israel took and occupied all the cities of the Amorites: including Heshbon, and its villages. 26Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land as far as the Arnon River. 27Therefore the poets say, “Come to Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be rebuilt and established; 28For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon: it has consumed Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of Arnon. 29Woe to you, Moab! You are undone, O people of Chemosh: he (their god Chemosh) has given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, as captives to Sihon, king of the Amorites. 30We have overthrown them; Heshbon has been laid waste from Dibon to Nophah, which reaches to Medeba.” 31And so Israel settled in the land of the Amorites. 32And Moses sent men to scout Jazer, and Israel took its villages, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

33Then they turned and went up along the road toward Bashan. And Og, king of Bashan, and his army, came to battle Israel at Edrei. 34And the LORD said to Moses, “Do not fear him; for I have delivered him, his army, and all his land into your hands; and you shall do to him what you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who reigned at Heshbon.” 35So they struck him, his sons, and all his people, until there was none left alive, and they occupied his land.
