1And the heads of the clans of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came and spoke to Moses, and the leaders of the Israelites; 2And they said, “The LORD commanded you to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the Israelites: and you were also commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad, our brother, to his daughters. 3But if they are married to sons of other tribes of the Israelites, then their inheritance shall be taken from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall go to the inheritance of the tribe to which they are received in marriage: and so it shall be taken from the share of our inheritance. 4And when the jubilee of the Israelites occurs, then their inheritance shall be part of the inheritance of the tribe to which they are received (into which they marry): such that their inheritance shall be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”

5Then, according to the word of the LORD, Moses commanded the Israelites: “The tribe of the sons of Joseph have spoken well. 6This is the thing which the LORD commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, ‘Let them marry whomever they think best; but they shall marry only within a family of the tribe of their father. 7So that the inheritance of the Israelites does not move from tribe to tribe: for every one of the Israelites shall retain to himself the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers. 8And every daughter, who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the Israelites, shall be wife to someone of the family of the tribe of her father, so that every man of the Israelites may enjoy the inheritance of his fathers. 9Nor shall the inheritance be transferred from one tribe to another; but each tribe of the Israelites shall keep the land of his own inheritance.”

10And so the daughters of Zelophehad did as the LORD commanded Moses: 11For Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to their father's brothers' sons; 12And they were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh, son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.

13These are the commandments and the ordinances, which the LORD gave to the Israelites by the hand of Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan near Jericho.
