1A wise son hears his father's instruction, but a mocker scoffs at correction. 2Wise words will gain you a good meal; but treacherous people desire and feed on violence. 3He that guards his mouth preserves his life, but he that speaks rashly shall come to ruin. 4The sluggard’s appetite is never satisfied; but the diligent shall prosper. 5A righteous man hates lying, but a wicked man is disgusting, and comes to shame. 6Righteousness guards those with integrity; but wicked men are easily misled. 7There is he that pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; and then there is he that acts as if he were poor, yet has great wealth. 8The wealthy man can pay ransom for his life; but the poor is not even threatened. 9The light of the righteous shines brightly; but the lamp of the wicked is soon snuffed out. 10Where there is pride there is contention; but with the well-advised is wisdom. 11Wealth gotten by dishonesty is soon depleted; but he that earns with his honest labor shall enjoy increase over time. 12Hope deferred makes the heart sick; but when a desired thing comes, it is a tree of life. 13Whoever despises instruction brings destruction upon himself; but he that obeys a command shall be rewarded. 14The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning them from the deadly traps. 15Good understanding wins favor, but transgressors are headed for disaster. 16Every prudent person acts out of knowledge; but a fool invites and boasts of his folly. 17A wicked messenger brings mischief, but a faithful ambassador brings healing. 18Poverty and shame come to those who refuse instruction; but he that heeds correction shall be honored. 19A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul; but fools refuse to turn from evil. 20He who walks with wise men shall be wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. 21Trouble pursues sinners; but the righteous shall be rewarded. 22A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children; but the wealth of the sinner passes to the just. 23The fallow unplowed ground of the poor has potential to provide much food, but injustice can destroy it. 24He that spares the rod of timely discipline hates (neglects) his children; but he that loves them gives them discipline when needed. 25The righteous eat to their hearts’ content; but the stomach of the wicked shall want.
