Michtam of David, when the Philistines took him in Gath*. *When David learned of Saul’s intent to kill him, in desperation he fled and sought refuge with Achish, king of Israel’s arch-enemy, the Philistines, at their city of Gath. But when the servants of Achish said, “Is this not David, of whom they sang “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands (of Philistines)?”, David realized that he was in mortal danger and began acting like a mad man, prompting Achish to tell his servants, “Look, you see the man is mad; why then have you brought him to me? Do I have need of mad men, that you have brought this fellow to act crazy in my presence? And they drove “mad man” David away, which effected his escape from his perilous brief stay at Gath of the Philistines. 1Be merciful to me, O God; for my enemies pursue me daily, ever pressing their unrelenting attack. 2My enemies that are at war against me are many, O Most High. 3When fear grips me, I will trust in You. 4I will praise You, in Whose word I place my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do to me. 5Every day they twist my words; and plot my ruin. 6They gather, they hide in ambush, marking my steps, and wait to kill me. 7Shall they get away with their evil? In Your anger cast them down, O God. 8You have kept track of my travels; and kept my tears in Your bottle. Are they not logged in Your book? 9I know that when I call upon You, my enemies will retreat; for You are for me. 10I have put my trust in You; and in Your word I will praise You. 11When I put my trust in God; I have no reason to fear what man can do to me. 12I will fulfill my vows to You, O God, to render offerings of praise unto You. 13For You have saved my soul from death, and my feet from stumbling, so that I may walk before You, God, in the light of the living?
