Luke 7:1-10 Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.… The story is told of a young general in the ninth century who, with five hundred men, came against a king with twenty thousand. The king sent word that it was the height of folly in so small an army to resist his legions. In reply the general called one of his men and said, "Take that sword and drive it to your heart." The man did so, and fell dead. To another he said, "Leap into yon chasm," and the man instantly obeyed. "Go," he said to the messenger, "and tell your king we have five hundred such men. We will die, but never surrender." The messenger returned with his message — a message that struck terror into the heart of the whole army of the king. (Baxendale.)
