I. WHAT IS IT? Twofold.

1. Good (Galatians 4:18).

2. Evil.

(1)  To grieve for another's excelling us.

(2)  To desire to excel him.

II. IT IS A SIN.

1. It proceeds from an evil root.

(1)  Error.

(2)  Pride.

2. It brings forth sinful fruit.

(1)  Contention.

(2)  Envy.

III. WHO ARE GUILTY OF IT.

1. Such as are zealous in a bad cause.

2. In a good cause in a bad manner (Romans 10:2).

3. More for themselves than God.

4. Such as love to see nobody above them.
