Psalm 75:1-10 To you, O God, do we give thanks, to you do we give thanks: for that your name is near your wondrous works declare. Such is the spirit of this psalm; fearlessness characterizes it throughout, and concerning this spirit it teaches much. I. ON WHAT SUCH SPIRIT RESTS. 1. On the conviction that God is near at hand for our help. "For that thy Name is near," etc. (ver. 1). 2. On the evidence for this conviction which God's "wondrous works" supplies: works in nature, providence, grace. II. THE FRUITS SUCH SPIRIT BEANS. 1. Thankfulness. (Ver. 1.) 2. Righteous dealing. (Ver. 2, "I will judge uprightly.") 3. Clear sightedness as to the reality of things (ver. 3). Where this spirit is, there is no fear of man. He shrinks not from facing and confessing the actual truth, however unwelcome it may be. 4. Cheerful toil. "I bear up the pillars of it" (ver. 3); cf. St. Paul, "I can do all things through Christ," etc. 5. Faithful testimony. (Ver. 4.) Against the wicked. For God (ver. 7). Concerning wrath to come (ver. 8). 6. Delight in God. (Ver. 9.) 7. Open siding with the right against the wrong (ver. 10). III. THE GREAT EXEMPLAR AND GIVER OF THIS SPIRIT - the Lord Jesus Christ. - S.C.
