Acts 3:1-11 Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour.… I. THE PROPER DISPOSITION from which Christian care for the poor should flow. 1. Love to God. The apostles were on their way to the temple. 2. Love of our neighbor. They regard the poor man with sympathy — John feeling, Peter helping. II. THE PROPER MEANS which Christian care of the poor should employ. Silver and gold is not the chief concern. Alms quickly thrown to the poor costs little, and bears little fruit. But — 1. Personal and living intercourse with the poor. "Peter looked," etc. 2. Evangelical counsel and comfort from the Word of God. "Such as I have," etc. III. THE PROPER RESULT in which Christian care for the poor should delight. 1. Bodily restoration — he could rise up and walk. 2. Spiritual health — he praised God. (C. Gerok.)
