Commissioned, Endowed, Preserved
Isaiah 51:16
And I have put my words in your mouth, and I have covered you in the shadow of my hand, that I may plant the heavens…

Like the first creation, the new is a gradual process, advancing from age to age.

I. IN THIS WORK GOD EMPLOYS HIS SERVANTS. When it is said, "That I may plant," etc., it is obvious that it is through Israel the work is to be done (1 Corinthians 3:9).

II. FOR THIS WORK GOD ARMS HIS SERVANTS. "I have put My words in thy mouth."

III. FOR THIS WORK AND IN IT GOD PRESERVES HIS SERVANTS. "I have covered thee," etc.

(W. Guthrie, M.A.)

Parallel Verses
KJV: And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.

WEB: I have put my words in your mouth, and have covered you in the shadow of my hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and tell Zion, 'You are my people.'"
