The boy who was with me said, 'Those are the mules that work all the week down in the mine, but on Sunday they have to come up into the light, or else in a little while they go blind.' It seems to me that what is necessary for mules is no less necessary for men. Keep men buried in this world's business for the whole seven days, and they would soon lose the very faculty of spiritual vision, having no eye, ear, or heart for Divine things.
