Ephesians 1:19-20 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,… I. THE PREROGATIVE OF GOD. Originally the possession of God the Father, then conferred on the Son of God. It was through "the eternal Spirit" Christ offered Himself, and by the Spirit He was quickened (Hebrews 9:14; 1 Peter 3:18). II. EXERCISED CHIEFLY IN THE CASE OF THE SON OF GOD. 1. In restoring life. 2. In exalting life to higher conditions and more spiritual states. 3. In glorifying the human nature. 4. In bestowing universal power and authority. III. EXTENDED TO BELIEVERS. 1. This suggests the greatness of the work requiring to be accomplished with regard to them. (1) Already accomplished. (2) Still to be completed. 2. It increases their faith. By the revelation of the vastness of the power that is being put forth; by the light cast upon their own experience; and by the pledge it affords of God's faithfulness. (A. F. Muir, M. A.)
