THESE ELEMENTS OF NATIONAL PROSPERITY AND HAPPINESS CANNOT BE OBTAINED OR PRESERVED EXCEPT BY THE INFLUENCE OF TRUE RELIGION. 1. The nature and tendency of what is opposed to religion. (1) Selfishness, which makes the heart hard. (2) Indolence and improvidence. (3) Intemperance. (4) Impurity. (5) Disregard to God. 2. True religion produces all those qualities which are the immediate spring and cause of prosperity and happiness. (1) A regard for God. (2) Thoughtfulness. (3) Truth.
