Paradise Lost; Or, Man's Fall
Genesis 3:1-6
Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, Yes, has God said…

I. THE SUBTLE TEMPTER. Changed the tree of probation into a tree of temptation.

II. THE FATAL TRANSGRESSION. Eve hesitated, and was drawn into the tempter's net. Then sin reproduces sin.

III. THE SAD DISCOVERY. Innocence gone: in its place was shame.

LESSONS:

1. To obey God's word, even when it contradicts our own inclinations.

2. To be humble and patient, waiting God's time and will, as to His "secret things."

3. To refuse to listen to temptation from without, and to evil lusts in ourselves.

(W. S. Smith, B. D.)

Parallel Verses

WEB: Now the serpent was more subtle than any animal of the field which Yahweh God had made. He said to the woman, "Has God really said, 'You shall not eat of any tree of the garden?'"
