He was sorry at the thought of giving up those large possessions of which he was naturally proud. 2. He was also grieved at the idea of losing heaven. 3. Thus opened to the young man's mind some of the difficulty which there always is in the attainment of everything which is really worth having. 4. Part of his sorrow was the discovery which he was making at that moment of his own heart. 5. But he was most sorrowful of all in the wretched sense he had of his own guilty hesitation and inexcusable weakness. Many worldly people are sorrowful in the midst of their worldliness; it indicates life and struggle. In any state of life the characteristic of the Christian is self-renunciation. (J. Vaughan, M. A.)
