John 5:1-18 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.… There is something beautifully significant in this word as here applied to Christ. He emerged, glided, dived forth invisibly from the waves of the crowd, and re- appeared in the quiet harbour of the house of God. Our Lord has now withdrawn His bodily presence from the crowd of this world in order that we may see Him with the eye of faith. He has dived through the clouds of this lower world of sin and sorrow, and has emerged into the pure, crystal, empyrian of heaven.()A metaphor from swimming; the multitude like water closing behind Him. We have no word in our poor tongue to express the retiring of Deity (Proverbs 25:2). The secret descent of the nightly dew, and the noiseless movement of the mighty orbs of heaven illustrate this.
