The Weekly Pulpit Luke 24:36-49 And as they thus spoke, Jesus himself stood in the middle of them, and said to them, Peace be to you.… I. IT BEHOVED CHRIST TO SUFFER. 1. Because He must show the evil of sin; and this is only seen in its results. 2. Because He must vindicate the Divine honour; and this He could only do by bearing the penalty of sin. 3. Because His truth would oppose the natural inclinations of men, and they would be sure to make Him suffer. 4. Because He must render a perfect obedience to the Father; and this could only be tested and proved by suffering. II. IT BEHOVED CHRIST TO RISE. 1. Because His work was a commission, and some sign of its acceptance was needed. 2. Because His work was incomplete at death; part must be accomplished in renewed life. (The Weekly Pulpit.)
