So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD,

Saul’s death in battle was the culmination of a reign marked by persistent rebellion against God. Though chosen as Israel’s first king, Saul refused to carry out the Lord’s command concerning Amalek and sought to preserve his own reputation rather than submit fully to God (1 Samuel 15). His end demonstrates that spiritual privilege and public position do not excuse disobedience. God requires wholehearted loyalty from those entrusted with leadership.

because he did not keep the word of the LORD

Saul repeatedly received clear instruction from God yet acted according to fear, pride, and human judgment. His disobedience led to God’s rejection of his dynasty and the anointing of David as the future king (1 Samuel 13:13–14; 15:22–23). David also sinned grievously, but he humbled himself and returned to the Lord; Saul habitually defended himself and resisted correction. Obedience to God’s revealed word remains the proper response of faith.

and even consulted a medium for guidance,

When the Philistine threat intensified and God did not answer Saul, he turned to a medium at Endor rather than repent and seek the Lord (1 Samuel 28). Such practices were forbidden because Israel was to depend upon God alone, not upon spirits or occult guidance (Leviticus 19:31; Deuteronomy 18:10–12). Saul’s secret visit to the medium exposed the depth of his spiritual collapse. Having rejected the word of the Lord, he sought counsel from a source God had condemned.

October the Seventeenth no Quest of God
"He inquired not of the Lord." --1 CHRONICLES x. 6-14. That was where Saul began to go wrong. When quest ceases, conquests cease. "He inquired not"; and this meant loss of light. God will be inquired after. He insists that we draw up the blinds if we would receive the light. If we board up our windows He will not drive the gentle rays through our hindrance. We must ask if we would have. The discipline of inquiry fits us for the counsel of the Lord. "He inquired not"; and this meant loss of sight.

And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers. 4. Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumsised

Chronicles
The comparative indifference with which Chronicles is regarded in modern times by all but professional scholars seems to have been shared by the ancient Jewish church. Though written by the same hand as wrote Ezra-Nehemiah, and forming, together with these books, a continuous history of Judah, it is placed after them in the Hebrew Bible, of which it forms the concluding book; and this no doubt points to the fact that it attained canonical distinction later than they. Nor is this unnatural. The book
