Top 10 Lesser-Known Heroes of the Bible

1) Shiphrah and Puah

These courageous midwives took a stand at a pivotal moment in history. When pressured by Pharaoh to harm newborn Hebrew boys, they refused. As it is written, “The midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had told them” (Exodus 1:17). Their quiet rebellion saved countless lives and showed how reverence for God can triumph over human intimidation.

2) The Wise Woman of Abel

Amid the chaos in 2 Samuel, this unnamed woman used her wit and words to bring peace to her besieged city. We read that “So the woman went to all the people with her wise counsel” (2 Samuel 20:22). Her quick thinking and diplomacy averted further bloodshed, reminding us that wisdom spoken at the right time can change everything.

3) Shamgar

In the book of Judges, uncertainty and danger were daily realities. Then we find this unassuming hero: “After Ehud came Shamgar... He struck down six hundred Philistines... He too saved Israel” (Judges 3:31). Armed with nothing more than an oxgoad, Shamgar overcame adversity, revealing that even simple tools can be mighty in the right hands.

4) Onesiphorus

Sometimes a hero quietly refreshes the weary. In Paul’s darkest hours, Onesiphorus stood by him. Scripture says, “May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me” (2 Timothy 1:16). His simple acts of kindness still inspire us to bring practical love to those in need.

5) Jehosheba

When a royal massacre threatened the future of a nation, Jehosheba intervened to protect the lineage leading to the Messiah. “Jehosheba... took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from the royal princes” (2 Kings 11:2). Her courageous rescue preserved a vital family line and reminds us that God’s purposes endure, even in turmoil.

6) Bezalel

The construction of the Tabernacle called for artistic skill, and Bezalel answered that call. “And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, understanding, and ability...” (Exodus 31:3). His creativity and craftsmanship demonstrate how spiritual gifting can take shape in very tangible, beautiful ways.

7) Jabez

In a long list of ancestral names, a short prayer stands out. “Jabez cried out, ‘If only You would bless me indeed...’ So God granted his request” (1 Chronicles 4:10). His earnest plea shows that reaching out for divine favor, with a sincere heart, can bring about real change in our lives.

8) Tychicus

Behind many great endeavors is someone reliable who keeps everyone informed and encouraged. “Tychicus, the beloved and faithful servant in the Lord, will inform you of everything” (Ephesians 6:21). His role as a trusted messenger underlines that faithful companionship can sustain communities of believers.

9) Micaiah

When surrounded by flattering voices, Micaiah was the lone prophet willing to speak the truth. Scripture records, “Micaiah said, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak whatever the LORD tells me’” (1 Kings 22:14). His unwavering commitment to honesty offers a stirring example for anyone feeling pressure to compromise.

10) Dorcas

Also known as Tabitha, Dorcas brimmed with compassion. “In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (Dorcas), who did good and helped the poor” (Acts 9:36). Her charitable deeds left such a mark that the community mourned deeply when she passed—until a remarkable miracle restored her. Dorcas’s selfless service still inspires us to love tangibly.

These lesser-known figures may not always headline sermons or stories, yet each one played a life-altering role in the grand narrative. Their faith and integrity shine all the more brightly when we see how God uses ordinary people—often in extraordinary ways—to demonstrate His power, compassion, and plan of redemption.
