Divine Sovereignty

Divine sovereignty refers to the supreme authority and power of God over all creation. It is a central theme in Christian theology, emphasizing that God is the ultimate ruler and sustainer of the universe. The concept of divine sovereignty is rooted in the understanding that God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, exercising His will in all things.

Scripture affirms God's sovereign rule in numerous passages. In Isaiah 46:9-10 , God declares, "Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all My purpose.’" This passage highlights God's unique ability to declare and bring about His purposes, underscoring His control over history and future events.

The sovereignty of God is also evident in His governance over nations and rulers. Proverbs 21:1 states, "The king’s heart is a waterway in the hand of the LORD; He directs it where He pleases." This illustrates that even the decisions of earthly rulers are under God's sovereign direction.

Furthermore, divine sovereignty is manifested in God's providential care for His creation. In Matthew 10:29-31 , Jesus teaches, "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." This passage reassures believers of God's intimate involvement and control over the details of their lives.

Prophecy

Prophecy in the Bible is the communication of divine messages through human intermediaries, often concerning future events or God's will for His people. Prophets were chosen by God to deliver His word, serving as His mouthpiece to guide, warn, and encourage His people.

The role of prophecy is multifaceted, encompassing foretelling future events and forth-telling God's truth. In Deuteronomy 18:18-19 , God promises Moses, "I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. And I will hold accountable anyone who does not listen to My words that the prophet speaks in My name." This passage underscores the authority and responsibility of the prophetic office.

Prophecy often serves to affirm God's sovereignty by revealing His plans and purposes. In Amos 3:7 , it is written, "Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets." This indicates that God, in His sovereignty, chooses to disclose His intentions to His prophets, who then communicate them to the people.

The fulfillment of prophecy is a testament to God's sovereign control over history. For instance, the prophecies concerning the coming of the Messiah, such as those found in Isaiah 53 and Micah 5:2, were fulfilled in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These fulfillments demonstrate God's ability to orchestrate events according to His divine plan.

Prophecy also serves as a means of calling God's people to repentance and faithfulness. The prophetic messages often include calls to return to God and warnings of judgment for disobedience, as seen in the ministries of prophets like Jeremiah and Ezekiel.
