Jesus, the Christ: Priesthood of: Offered Himself As a Sacrifice

The priesthood of Jesus Christ is a central theme in Christian theology, emphasizing His role as both the High Priest and the sacrificial offering. Unlike the Levitical priests of the Old Testament, who offered animal sacrifices repeatedly, Jesus offered Himself once for all as the perfect and final sacrifice for sin.

The Role of High Priest

Jesus' priesthood is unique and superior to the Aaronic priesthood. The Epistle to the Hebrews elaborates on this, presenting Jesus as a High Priest in the order of Melchizedek, a priesthood that is eternal and not based on lineage (Hebrews 7:17). This priesthood is characterized by its perfection and permanence, as Jesus "holds His priesthood permanently, because He continues forever" (Hebrews 7:24).

The Sacrificial Offering

The sacrificial aspect of Jesus' priesthood is pivotal. Unlike the sacrifices of the Old Covenant, which were unable to perfect the conscience of the worshiper (Hebrews 9:9), Jesus' sacrifice was efficacious and complete. Hebrews 9:12 states, "He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, not by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood, thus securing eternal redemption" . This act of offering Himself was both voluntary and necessary for the atonement of humanity's sins.

The Once-for-All Sacrifice

The singularity and sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice are emphasized throughout the New Testament. Hebrews 10:10 declares, "And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all" . This once-for-all sacrifice contrasts with the repeated offerings of the Old Testament, highlighting the completeness of Christ's atoning work.

The Fulfillment of Prophecy

Jesus' sacrificial death was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and typologies. Isaiah 53:5 foretells the suffering servant who would be "pierced for our transgressions" and "crushed for our iniquities" . Jesus Himself acknowledged His role as the sacrificial Lamb, as seen in John 10:17-18, where He states, "The reason the Father loves Me is that I lay down My life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord" .

The Mediator of a New Covenant

Through His sacrificial death, Jesus inaugurated a new covenant between God and humanity. Hebrews 9:15 explains, "For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, now that He has died to redeem them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant" . This new covenant is marked by the internalization of God's laws and the direct access believers have to God through Christ.

The Ongoing Intercession

Even after His sacrificial death, Jesus continues His priestly role through intercession. Hebrews 7:25 assures believers, "Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them" . This ongoing intercession underscores the continuous and active nature of Christ's priesthood.

In summary, the priesthood of Jesus Christ, particularly His self-offering as a sacrifice, is foundational to Christian faith. It underscores His unique role as the mediator between God and humanity, fulfilling the requirements of the law and establishing a new covenant through His blood.
