When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son.1When Israel was a youth I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son.
But the more I called Israel, the farther they departed from Me. They sacrificed to the Baals and burned incense to carved images.2The more they called them, The more they went from them; They kept sacrificing to the Baals And burning incense to idols.
It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them in My arms, but they never realized that it was I who healed them.3Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them in My arms; But they did not know that I healed them.
I led them with cords of kindness, with ropes of love; I lifted the yoke from their necks and bent down to feed them.4I led them with cords of a man, with bonds of love, And I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws; And I bent down and fed them.
Will they not return to the land of Egypt and be ruled by Assyria because they refused to repent?5They will not return to the land of Egypt; But Assyria-- he will be their king Because they refused to return to Me.
A sword will flash through their cities; it will destroy the bars of their gates and consume them in their own plans.6The sword will whirl against their cities, And will demolish their gate bars And consume them because of their counsels.
My people are bent on turning from Me. Though they call to the Most High, He will by no means exalt them.7So My people are bent on turning from Me. Though they call them to the One on high, None at all exalts Him.
How could I give you up, O Ephraim? How could I surrender you, O Israel? How could I make you like Admah? How could I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned within Me; My compassion is stirred!8How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I surrender you, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned over within Me, All My compassions are kindled.
I will not execute the full fury of My anger; I will not turn back to destroy Ephraim. For I am God and not man—the Holy One among you—and I will not come in wrath.9I will not execute My fierce anger; I will not destroy Ephraim again. For I am God and not man, the Holy One in your midst, And I will not come in wrath.
They will walk after the LORD; He will roar like a lion. When He roars, His children will come trembling from the west.10They will walk after the LORD, He will roar like a lion; Indeed He will roar And His sons will come trembling from the west.
They will come trembling like birds from Egypt and like doves from the land of Assyria. Then I will settle them in their homes, declares the LORD.11They will come trembling like birds from Egypt And like doves from the land of Assyria; And I will settle them in their houses, declares the LORD.
Ephraim surrounds Me with lies, the house of Israel with deceit; but Judah still walks with God and is faithful to the Holy One.12Ephraim surrounds Me with lies And the house of Israel with deceit; Judah is also unruly against God, Even against the Holy One who is faithful.
