From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God, | 1Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish, |
saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice. | 2and he said, "I called out of my distress to the LORD, And He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice. |
For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me. | 3"For You had cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the current engulfed me. All Your breakers and billows passed over me. |
At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’ | 4"So I said, 'I have been expelled from Your sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple.' |
The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head. | 5"Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head. |
To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God! | 6"I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God. |
As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple. | 7"While I was fainting away, I remembered the LORD, And my prayer came to You, Into Your holy temple. |
Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion. | 8"Those who regard vain idols Forsake their faithfulness, |
But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!” | 9But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the LORD." |
And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. | 10Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land. |
