Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that "we all have knowledge." Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.1Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.
If anyone thinks he knows anything, he does not yet know it as he ought to know it.2The one who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know.
But if anyone loves God, he is known by him.3But the one who loves God is known by God.
About eating food sacrificed to idols, then, we know that "an idol is nothing in the world," and that "there is no God but one."4So about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world, and that there is no God but one.
For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth--as there are many "gods" and many "lords"--5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many so-called gods and lords),
yet for us there is one God, the Father. All things are from him, and we exist for him. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ. All things are through him, and we exist through him.6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we exist. And there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we exist.
However, not everyone has this knowledge. Some have been so used to idolatry up until now that when they eat food sacrificed to an idol, their conscience, being weak, is defiled.7But not everyone has this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that they eat such food as if it were sacrificed to an idol. And since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.
Food will not bring us close to God. We are not worse off if we don't eat, and we are not better if we do eat.8But food does not bring us closer to God: We are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.
But be careful that this right of yours in no way becomes a stumbling block to the weak.9Be careful, however, that your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak.
For if someone sees you, the one who has knowledge, dining in an idol's temple, won't his weak conscience be encouraged to eat food offered to idols?10For if someone with a weak conscience sees you who are well informed eating in an idol’s temple, will he not be encouraged to eat food sacrificed to idols?
So the weak person, the brother or sister for whom Christ died, is ruined by your knowledge.11So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge.
Now when you sin like this against brothers and sisters and wound their weak conscience, you are sinning against Christ.12By sinning against your brothers in this way and wounding their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.
Therefore, if food causes my brother or sister to fall, I will never again eat meat, so that I won't cause my brother or sister to fall.13Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to stumble.
