Job 4
ESV Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
English Standard VersionNew International Version
Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:1Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
“If one ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? Yet who can keep from speaking?2"If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? But who can keep from speaking?
Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands.3Think how you have instructed many, how you have strengthened feeble hands.
Your words have upheld him who was stumbling, and you have made firm the feeble knees.4Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees.
But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; it touches you, and you are dismayed.5But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dismayed.
Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope?6Should not your piety be your confidence and your blameless ways your hope?
“Remember: who that was innocent ever perished? Or where were the upright cut off?7"Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Where were the upright ever destroyed?
As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same.8As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it.
By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed.9At the breath of God they perish; at the blast of his anger they are no more.
The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions are broken.10The lions may roar and growl, yet the teeth of the great lions are broken.
The strong lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.11The lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
“Now a word was brought to me stealthily; my ear received the whisper of it.12"A word was secretly brought to me, my ears caught a whisper of it.
Amid thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,13Amid disquieting dreams in the night, when deep sleep falls on people,
dread came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake.14fear and trembling seized me and made all my bones shake.
A spirit glided past my face; the hair of my flesh stood up.15A spirit glided past my face, and the hair on my body stood on end.
It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes; there was silence, then I heard a voice:16It stopped, but I could not tell what it was. A form stood before my eyes, and I heard a hushed voice:
‘Can mortal man be in the right before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker?17Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can even a strong man be more pure than his Maker?
Even in his servants he puts no trust, and his angels he charges with error;18If God places no trust in his servants, if he charges his angels with error,
how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed like the moth.19how much more those who live in houses of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, who are crushed more readily than a moth!
Between morning and evening they are beaten to pieces; they perish forever without anyone regarding it.20Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces; unnoticed, they perish forever.
Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them, do they not die, and that without wisdom?’21Are not the cords of their tent pulled up, so that they die without wisdom?'
