Deuteronomy 8
KJV Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
King James BibleEnglish Standard Version
All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.1“The whole commandment that I command you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers.
And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.2And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.
And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.3And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.4Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years.
Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.5Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you.
Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.6So you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him.
For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;7For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills,
A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey,
A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.9a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper.
When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.10And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.
Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:11“Take care lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today,
Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;12lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them,
And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;13and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied,
Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;14then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery,
Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;15who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock,
Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;16who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.
And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.17Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’
But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.18You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.19And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish.
As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.20Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God.
