King James Bible | English Standard Version |
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, | 1Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, |
Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. | 2saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” |
When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. | 3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; |
And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. | 4and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. |
And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, | 5They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: |
And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. | 6“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” |
Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. | 7Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. |
And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. | 8And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” |
When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. | 9After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. |
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. | 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. |
And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. | 11And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. |
And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. | 12And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. |
And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. | 13Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” |
When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: | 14And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt |
And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. | 15and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” |
Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. | 16Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. |
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, | 17Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: |
In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. | 18“A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.” |
But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, | 19But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, |
Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life. | 20saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” |
And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. | 21And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. |
But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: | 22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. |
And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. | 23And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene. |
