But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness. | 1But I determined this for my own sake, that I would not come to you in sorrow again. |
For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me? | 2For if I cause you sorrow, who then makes me glad but the one whom I made sorrowful? |
And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all. | 3This is the very thing I wrote you, so that when I came, I would not have sorrow from those who ought to make me rejoice; having confidence in you all that my joy would be the joy of you all. |
For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you. | 4For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears; not so that you would be made sorrowful, but that you might know the love which I have especially for you. |
But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all. | 5But if any has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow not to me, but in some degree-- in order not to say too much-- to all of you. |
Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. | 6Sufficient for such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the majority, |
So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. | 7so that on the contrary you should rather forgive and comfort him, otherwise such a one might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. |
Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him. | 8Wherefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him. |
For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things. | 9For to this end also I wrote, so that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things. |
To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; | 10But one whom you forgive anything, I forgive also; for indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did it for your sakes in the presence of Christ, |
Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. | 11so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes. |
Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord, | 12Now when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ and when a door was opened for me in the Lord, |
I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia. | 13I had no rest for my spirit, not finding Titus my brother; but taking my leave of them, I went on to Macedonia. |
Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. | 14But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. |
For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: | 15For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; |
To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things? | 16to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is adequate for these things? |
For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ. | 17For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God. |
