New American Standard Bible 1995 | English Standard Version |
A Song of Ascents, of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman keeps awake in vain. | 1Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. |
It is vain for you to rise up early, To retire late, To eat the bread of painful labors; For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep. | 2It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. |
Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. | 3Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. |
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one's youth. | 4Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. |
How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; They will not be ashamed When they speak with their enemies in the gate. | 5Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate. |
