Then it came about, when Jabin king of Hazor heard of it, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon and to the king of Shimron and to the king of Achshaph,1When King Jabin of Hazor heard the news, he organized a coalition, including King Jobab of Madon, the king of Shimron, the king of Acshaph,
and to the kings who were of the north in the hill country, and in the Arabah-- south of Chinneroth and in the lowland and on the heights of Dor on the west--2and the northern kings who ruled in the hill country, the Arabah south of Kinnereth, the lowlands, and the heights of Dor to the west.
to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Jebusite in the hill country, and the Hivite at the foot of Hermon in the land of Mizpeh.3Canaanites came from the east and west; Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, and Jebusites from the hill country; and Hivites from below Hermon in the area of Mizpah.
They came out, they and all their armies with them, as many people as the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots.4These kings came out with their armies; they were as numerous as the sand on the seashore and had a large number of horses and chariots.
So all of these kings having agreed to meet, came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.5All these kings gathered and joined forces at the Waters of Merom to fight Israel.
Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow at this time I will deliver all of them slain before Israel; you shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire."6The LORD told Joshua, "Don't be afraid of them, for about this time tomorrow I will cause all of them to lie dead before Israel. You must hamstring their horses and burn their chariots."
So Joshua and all the people of war with him came upon them suddenly by the waters of Merom, and attacked them.7Joshua and his whole army caught them by surprise at the Waters of Merom and attacked them.
The LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, so that they defeated them, and pursued them as far as Great Sidon and Misrephoth-maim and the valley of Mizpeh to the east; and they struck them until no survivor was left to them.8The LORD handed them over to Israel and they struck them down and chased them all the way to Greater Sidon, Misrephoth Maim, and the Mizpah Valley to the east. They struck them down until no survivors remained.
Joshua did to them as the LORD had told him; he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.9Joshua did to them as the LORD had commanded him; he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.
Then Joshua turned back at that time, and captured Hazor and struck its king with the sword; for Hazor formerly was the head of all these kingdoms.10At that time Joshua turned, captured Hazor, and struck down its king with the sword, for Hazor was at that time the leader of all these kingdoms.
They struck every person who was in it with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them; there was no one left who breathed. And he burned Hazor with fire.11They annihilated everyone who lived there with the sword--no one who breathed remained--and burned Hazor.
Joshua captured all the cities of these kings, and all their kings, and he struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed them; just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded.12Joshua captured all these royal cities and all their kings and annihilated them with the sword, as Moses the LORD's servant had commanded.
However, Israel did not burn any cities that stood on their mounds, except Hazor alone, which Joshua burned.13But Israel did not burn any of the cities located on mounds, except for Hazor; it was the only one Joshua burned.
All the spoil of these cities and the cattle, the sons of Israel took as their plunder; but they struck every man with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them. They left no one who breathed.14The Israelites plundered all the goods of these cities and the cattle, but they totally destroyed all the people and allowed no one who breathed to live.
Just as the LORD had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD had commanded Moses.15Moses the LORD's servant passed on the LORD's commands to Joshua, and Joshua did as he was told. He did not ignore any of the commands the LORD had given Moses.
Thus Joshua took all that land: the hill country and all the Negev, all that land of Goshen, the lowland, the Arabah, the hill country of Israel and its lowland16Joshua conquered the whole land, including the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the lowlands, the Arabah, the hill country of Israel and its lowlands,
from Mount Halak, that rises toward Seir, even as far as Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon at the foot of Mount Hermon. And he captured all their kings and struck them down and put them to death.17from Mount Halak on up to Seir, as far as Baal Gad in the Lebanon Valley below Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings and executed them.
Joshua waged war a long time with all these kings.18Joshua campaigned against these kings for quite some time.
There was not a city which made peace with the sons of Israel except the Hivites living in Gibeon; they took them all in battle.19No city made peace with the Israelites (except the Hivites living in Gibeon); they had to conquer all of them,
For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, to meet Israel in battle in order that he might utterly destroy them, that they might receive no mercy, but that he might destroy them, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.20for the LORD determined to make them obstinate so they would attack Israel. He wanted Israel to annihilate them without mercy, as he had instructed Moses.
Then Joshua came at that time and cut off the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab and from all the hill country of Judah and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.21At that time Joshua attacked and eliminated the Anakites from the hill country--from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and all the hill country of Judah and Israel. Joshua annihilated them and their cities.
There were no Anakim left in the land of the sons of Israel; only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod some remained.22No Anakites were left in Israelite territory, though some remained in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.
So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD had spoken to Moses, and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. Thus the land had rest from war.23Joshua conquered the whole land, just as the LORD had promised Moses, and he assigned Israel their tribal portions. Then the land was free of war.
