David again assembled all the best men in Israel, thirty thousand in number.1David again assembled all the fit young men in Israel: thirty thousand.
David and all the men who were with him traveled to Baalah in Judah to bring up from there the ark of God which is called by the name of the LORD of hosts, who sits enthroned between the cherubim that are on it.2He and all his troops set out to bring the ark of God from Baale-judah. The ark bears the Name, the name of the LORD of Armies who is enthroned between the cherubim.
They loaded the ark of God on a new cart and carried it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart.3They set the ark of God on a new cart and transported it from Abinadab's house, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the cart
They brought it with the ark of God up from the house of Abinadab on the hill. Ahio was walking in front of the ark,4and brought it with the ark of God from Abinadab's house on the hill. Ahio walked in front of the ark.
while David and all Israel were energetically celebrating before the LORD, singing and playing various stringed instruments, tambourines, rattles, and cymbals. 5David and the whole house of Israel were dancing before the LORD with all kinds of fir wood instruments, lyres, harps, tambourines, sistrums, and cymbals.
When they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and grabbed hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled.6When they came to Nacon's threshing floor, Uzzah reached out to the ark of God and took hold of it because the oxen had stumbled.
The LORD was so furious with Uzzah, he killed him on the spot for his negligence. He died right there beside the ark of God. 7Then the LORD's anger burned against Uzzah, and God struck him dead on the spot for his irreverence, and he died there next to the ark of God.
David was angry because the LORD attacked Uzzah; so he called that place Perez Uzzah, which remains its name to this very day.8David was angry because of the LORD's outburst against Uzzah, so he named that place Outburst Against Uzzah, as it is today.
David was afraid of the LORD that day and said, "How will the ark of the LORD ever come to me?"9David feared the LORD that day and said, "How can the ark of the LORD ever come to me?"
So David was no longer willing to bring the ark of the LORD to be with him in the City of David. David left it in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.10So he was not willing to bring the ark of the LORD to the city of David; instead, he diverted it to the house of Obed-edom of Gath.
The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months. The LORD blessed Obed-Edom and all his family.11The ark of the LORD remained in his house three months, and the LORD blessed Obed-edom and his whole family.
David was told, "The LORD has blessed the family of Obed-Edom and everything he owns because of the ark of God." So David went and joyfully brought the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David.12It was reported to King David: "The LORD has blessed Obed-edom's family and all that belongs to him because of the ark of God." So David went and had the ark of God brought up from Obed-edom's house to the city of David with rejoicing.
Those who carried the ark of the LORD took six steps and then David sacrificed an ox and a fatling calf.13When those carrying the ark of the LORD advanced six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened calf.
Now David, wearing a linen ephod, was dancing with all his strength before the LORD.14David was dancing with all his might before the LORD wearing a linen ephod.
David and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD, shouting and blowing trumpets. 15He and the whole house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of the ram's horn.
As the ark of the LORD entered the City of David, Saul's daughter Michal looked out the window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she despised him.16As the ark of the LORD was entering the city of David, Saul's daughter Michal looked down from the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, and she despised him in her heart.
They brought the ark of the LORD and put it in its place in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before the LORD.17They brought the ark of the LORD and set it in its place inside the tent David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings in the LORD's presence.
When David finished offering the burnt sacrifices and peace offerings, he pronounced a blessing over the people in the name of the LORD of hosts.18When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of Armies.
He then handed out to each member of the entire assembly of Israel, both men and women, a portion of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake. Then all the people went home.19Then he distributed a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake to each one in the entire Israelite community, both men and women. Then all the people went home.
When David went home to pronounce a blessing on his own house, Michal, Saul's daughter, came out to meet him. She said, "How the king of Israel has distinguished himself this day! He has exposed himself today before his servants' slave girls the way a vulgar fool might do!" 20When David returned home to bless his household, Saul's daughter Michal came out to meet him. "How the king of Israel honored himself today!" she said. "He exposed himself today in the sight of the slave girls of his subjects like a vulgar person would expose himself."
David replied to Michal, "It was before the LORD! I was celebrating before the LORD, who chose me over your father and his entire family and appointed me as leader over the LORD's people Israel.21David replied to Michal, "It was before the LORD who chose me over your father and his whole family to appoint me ruler over the LORD's people Israel. I will dance before the LORD,
I am willing to shame and humiliate myself even more than this! But with the slave girls whom you mentioned let me be distinguished!"22and I will dishonor myself and humble myself even more. However, by the slave girls you spoke about, I will be honored."
Now Michal, Saul's daughter, had no children to the day of her death. 23And Saul's daughter Michal had no child to the day of her death.
