NET Bible | King James Bible |
Why do the nations rebel? Why are the countries devising plots that will fail? | 1Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? |
The kings of the earth form a united front; the rulers collaborate against the LORD and his anointed king. | 2The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, |
They say, "Let's tear off the shackles they've put on us! Let's free ourselves from their ropes!" | 3Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. |
The one enthroned in heaven laughs in disgust; the Lord taunts them. | 4He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. |
Then he angrily speaks to them and terrifies them in his rage, saying, | 5Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. |
"I myself have installed my king on Zion, my holy hill." | 6Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. |
The king says, "I will announce the LORD's decree. He said to me: 'You are my son! This very day I have become your father! | 7I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. |
Ask me, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the ends of the earth as your personal property. | 8Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. |
You will break them with an iron scepter; you will smash them like a potter's jar!'" | 9Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. |
So now, you kings, do what is wise; you rulers of the earth, submit to correction! | 10Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. |
Serve the LORD in fear! Repent in terror! | 11Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. |
Give sincere homage! Otherwise he will be angry, and you will die because of your behavior, when his anger quickly ignites. How blessed are all who take shelter in him! | 12Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. |
