You must keep carefully all these commandments I am giving you today so that you may live, increase in number, and go in and occupy the land that the LORD promised to your ancestors.1"All the commandments that I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to give to your forefathers.
Remember the whole way by which he has brought you these forty years through the desert so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not.2"You shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.
So he humbled you by making you hungry and then feeding you with unfamiliar manna. He did this to teach you that humankind cannot live by bread alone, but also by everything that comes from the LORD's mouth.3"He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.
Your clothing did not wear out nor did your feet swell all these forty years.4"Your clothing did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years.
Be keenly aware that just as a parent disciplines his child, the LORD your God disciplines you.5"Thus you are to know in your heart that the LORD your God was disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son.
So you must keep his commandments, live according to his standards, and revere him.6"Therefore, you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him.
For the LORD your God is bringing you to a good land, a land of brooks, springs, and fountains flowing forth in valleys and hills,7"For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills;
a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, of olive trees and honey,8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey;
a land where you may eat food in plenty and find no lack of anything, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you can mine copper.9a land where you will eat food without scarcity, in which you will not lack anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper.
You will eat your fill and then praise the LORD your God because of the good land he has given you. 10"When you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you.
Be sure you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments, ordinances, and statutes that I am giving you today.11"Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments and His ordinances and His statutes which I am commanding you today;
When you eat your fill, when you build and occupy good houses,12otherwise, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them,
when your cattle and flocks increase, when you have plenty of silver and gold, and when you have abundance of everything,13and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies,
be sure you do not feel self-important and forget the LORD your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery,14then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
and who brought you through the great, fearful desert of venomous serpents and scorpions, an arid place with no water. He made water flow from a flint rock and15"He led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water; He brought water for you out of the rock of flint.
fed you in the desert with manna (which your ancestors had never before known) so that he might by humbling you test you and eventually bring good to you.16"In the wilderness He fed you manna which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do good for you in the end.
Be careful not to say, "My own ability and skill have gotten me this wealth."17"Otherwise, you may say in your heart, 'My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.'
You must remember the LORD your God, for he is the one who gives ability to get wealth; if you do this he will confirm his covenant that he made by oath to your ancestors, even as he has to this day.18"But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
Now if you forget the LORD your God at all and follow other gods, worshiping and prostrating yourselves before them, I testify to you today that you will surely be annihilated.19"It shall come about if you ever forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish.
Just like the nations the LORD is about to destroy from your sight, so he will do to you because you would not obey him. 20"Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so you shall perish; because you would not listen to the voice of the LORD your God.
