| 1Moreover Job continued his discourse, and said: | 1And Job took up his discourse again: |
| 2“As God lives, who has taken away my justice, And the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter, | 2"As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made my life bitter-- |
| 3As long as my breath is in me, And the breath of God in my nostrils, | 3for while my spirit is still in me, and the breath from God is in my nostrils, |
| 4My lips will not speak wickedness, Nor my tongue utter deceit. | 4my lips will not speak wickedness, and my tongue will whisper no deceit. |
| 5Far be it from me That I should say you are right; Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. | 5I will never declare that you three are in the right; until I die, I will not set aside my integrity! |
| 6My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go; My heart shall not reproach me as long as I live. | 6I will maintain my righteousness and never let it go; my conscience will not reproach me for as long as I live. |
| 7“May my enemy be like the wicked, And he who rises up against me like the unrighteous. | 7"May my enemy be like the wicked, my adversary like the unrighteous. |
| 8For what is the hope of the hypocrite, Though he may gain much, If God takes away his life? | 8For what hope does the godless have when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? |
| 9Will God hear his cry When trouble comes upon him? | 9Does God listen to his cry when distress overtakes him? |
| 10Will he delight himself in the Almighty? Will he always call on God? | 10Will he find delight in the Almighty? Will he call out to God at all times? |
| 11“I will teach you about the hand of God; What is with the Almighty I will not conceal. | 11I will teach you about the power of God; What is on the Almighty's mind I will not conceal. |
| 12Surely all of you have seen it; Why then do you behave with complete nonsense? | 12If you yourselves have all seen this, Why in the world do you continue this meaningless talk? |
| 13“This is the portion of a wicked man with God, And the heritage of oppressors, received from the Almighty: | 13This is the portion of the wicked man allotted by God, the inheritance that evildoers receive from the Almighty. |
| 14If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword; And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. | 14If his children increase--it is for the sword! His offspring never have enough to eat. |
| 15Those who survive him shall be buried in death, And their widows shall not weep, | 15Those who survive him are buried by the plague, and their widows do not mourn for them. |
| 16Though he heaps up silver like dust, And piles up clothing like clay— | 16If he piles up silver like dust and stores up clothing like mounds of clay, |
| 17He may pile it up, but the just will wear it, And the innocent will divide the silver. | 17what he stores up a righteous man will wear, and an innocent man will inherit his silver. |
| 18He builds his house like a moth, Like a booth which a watchman makes. | 18The house he builds is as fragile as a moth's cocoon, like a hut that a watchman has made. |
| 19The rich man will lie down, But not be gathered up; He opens his eyes, And he is no more. | 19He goes to bed wealthy, but will do so no more. When he opens his eyes, it is all gone. |
| 20Terrors overtake him like a flood; A tempest steals him away in the night. | 20Terrors overwhelm him like a flood; at night a whirlwind carries him off. |
| 21The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; It sweeps him out of his place. | 21The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. |
| 22It hurls against him and does not spare; He flees desperately from its power. | 22It hurls itself against him without pity as he flees headlong from its power. |
| 23Men shall clap their hands at him, And shall hiss him out of his place. | 23It claps its hands at him in derision and hisses him away from his place. |
