New Living Translation | Berean Study Bible |
Again a message came to me from the LORD: | 1Moreover, the word of the LORD came to me, saying, |
“Son of man, turn and face Mount Seir, and prophesy against its people. | 2“Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir and prophesy against it, |
Give them this message from the Sovereign LORD: “I am your enemy, O Mount Seir, and I will raise my fist against you to destroy you completely. | 3and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I am against you, O Mount Seir. I will stretch out My hand against you and make you a desolate waste. |
I will demolish your cities and make you desolate. Then you will know that I am the LORD. | 4I will turn your cities into ruins, and you will become a desolation. Then you will know that I am the LORD. |
“Your eternal hatred for the people of Israel led you to butcher them when they were helpless, when I had already punished them for all their sins. | 5Because you harbored an ancient hatred and delivered the Israelites over to the sword in the time of their disaster at the final stage of their punishment, |
As surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD, since you show no distaste for blood, I will give you a bloodbath of your own. Your turn has come! | 6therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will give you over to bloodshed and it will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, it will pursue you. |
I will make Mount Seir utterly desolate, killing off all who try to escape and any who return. | 7I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste and will cut off from it those who come and go. |
I will fill your mountains with the dead. Your hills, your valleys, and your ravines will be filled with people slaughtered by the sword. | 8I will fill its mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills, in your valleys, and in all your ravines. |
I will make you desolate forever. Your cities will never be rebuilt. Then you will know that I am the LORD. | 9I will make you a perpetual desolation, and your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the LORD. |
“For you said, ‘The lands of Israel and Judah will be ours. We will take possession of them. What do we care that the LORD is there!’ | 10Because you have said, ‘These two nations and countries will be ours, and we will possess them,’ even though the LORD was there, |
Therefore, as surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD, I will pay back your angry deeds with my own. I will punish you for all your acts of anger, envy, and hatred. And I will make myself known to Israel by what I do to you. | 11therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will treat you according to the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred against them, and I will make Myself known among them when I judge you. |
Then you will know that I, the LORD, have heard every contemptuous word you spoke against the mountains of Israel. For you said, ‘They are desolate; they have been given to us as food to eat!’ | 12Then you will know that I, the LORD, have heard every contemptuous word you uttered against the mountains of Israel when you said, ‘They are desolate; they are given to us to devour!’ |
In saying that, you boasted proudly against me, and I have heard it all! | 13You boasted against Me with your mouth and multiplied your words against Me. I heard it Myself! |
“This is what the Sovereign LORD says: The whole world will rejoice when I make you desolate. | 14This is what the Lord GOD says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. |
You rejoiced at the desolation of Israel’s territory. Now I will rejoice at yours! You will be wiped out, you people of Mount Seir and all who live in Edom! Then you will know that I am the LORD. | 15As you rejoiced when the inheritance of the house of Israel became desolate, so will I do to you. You will become a desolation, O Mount Seir, and so will all of Edom. Then they will know that I am the LORD. |
