1Then after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. 2I went in response to a revelation and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race in vain.2I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain.2It was because of a revelation that I went up; and I submitted to them the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but I did so in private to those who were of reputation, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain.2And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.2I went up according to a revelation and presented to them the gospel I preach among the Gentiles--but privately to those recognized as leaders--so that I might not be running, or have run the race, in vain.
3Yet not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek.3But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek.3But not even Titus, who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.3But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:3But not even Titus who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.
4This matter arose because some false believers had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves.4Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery—4But it was because of the false brethren secretly brought in, who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage.4And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:4This issue arose because of false brothers smuggled in, who came in secretly to spy on the freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, in order to enslave us.

5We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.5to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.5But we did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.5To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.5But we did not give up and submit to these people for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would be preserved for you.
6As for those who were held in high esteem--whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism--they added nothing to my message.6And from those who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those, I say, who seemed influential added nothing to me.6But from those who were of high reputation (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)-- well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me.6But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:6Now from those recognized as important (what they really were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism)--they added nothing to me.
7On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised.7On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised7But on the contrary, seeing that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised7But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;7On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel for the uncircumcised, just as Peter was for the circumcised,
8For God, who was at work in Peter as an apostle to the circumcised, was also at work in me as an apostle to the Gentiles.8(for he who worked through Peter for his apostolic ministry to the circumcised worked also through me for mine to the Gentiles),8(for He who effectually worked for Peter in his apostleship to the circumcised effectually worked for me also to the Gentiles),8(For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)8since the One at work in Peter for an apostleship to the circumcised was also at work in me for the Gentiles.
9James, Cephas and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised.9and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.9and recognizing the grace that had been given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we might go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.9And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.9When James, Cephas, and John, recognized as pillars, acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to me and Barnabas, agreeing that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.
10All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.10Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.10They only asked us to remember the poor-- the very thing I also was eager to do.10Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.10They asked only that we would remember the poor, which I made every effort to do.

Paul Confronts Peter

12For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.12For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party.12For prior to the coming of certain men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision.12For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.12For he regularly ate with the Gentiles before certain men came from James. However, when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, because he feared those from the circumcision party.
13The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.13And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.13The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.13And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.13Then the rest of the Jews joined his hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.
14When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, "You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?14But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”14But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?14But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?14But when I saw that they were deviating from the truth of the gospel, I told Cephas in front of everyone, "If you, who are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel Gentiles to live like Jews?"

15"We who are Jews by birth and not sinful Gentiles15We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners;15"We are Jews by nature and not sinners from among the Gentiles;15We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,15We who are Jews by birth and not "Gentile sinners"
16know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.16yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.16nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.16Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.16know that no one is justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ. And we have believed in Christ Jesus so that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no human being will be justified.
17"But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners, doesn't that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not!17But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not!17"But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin? May it never be!17But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.17But if we ourselves are also found to be "sinners" while seeking to be justified by Christ, is Christ then a promoter of sin? Absolutely not!
18If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a lawbreaker.18For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor.18"For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a transgressor.18For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.18If I rebuild the system I tore down, I show myself to be a lawbreaker.
19"For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.19For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God.19"For through the Law I died to the Law, so that I might live to God.19For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.19For through the law I have died to the law, so that I might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ

20I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.20I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.20"I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.20I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.20and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
21I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"21I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.21"I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly."21I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.21I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.
